The One Travel Essential Our Editor Can’t Live Without

Traveling has been a huge part of my life since before I could even walk. Popping my ears during takeoff is probably one of my earliest core memories. Once my parents moved us to the States, our airline miles only grew due to yearly or bi-yearly trips back to Puerto Rico to visit our family. Then 2020 hit—and you know the rest. However, my little travel hiatus lasted longer than intended because I also popped out two kids during quarantine (great timing, I know). Somehow I blinked and realized it’d been nearly four years since I left my city.

It wasn’t until this past spring that I finally stepped foot in an airport for a work trip to Chicago. In the weeks leading up to my trip, I felt like a total novice and had anxiety sweats about what and how to pack. I think I agonized over what water bottle to bring for two weeks straight. I ultimately decided to forgo a reusable bottle and buy a plastic one at the airport to use during my stay. Spoiler: I would come to emphatically regret this decision and wish I had invested in something reliable like LifeStraw’s Go Series water filter bottle.

After spending $8 (you read that right) on a plastic water bottle in my terminal, I proceeded to refill it approximately zero times for the following three days. Every water fountain I encountered was beyond sketchy—and don’t even get me started on the tap water. I was thoroughly dehydrated by the time I came home and vowed to invest in a water filter bottle for my next trip. Once I finally snagged LifeStraw’s Go Series, I couldn’t believe how convenient it was. Now that I’ve tried it, here are three reasons I can’t stop recommending it:

1. LifeStraw’s Go Series makes sketchy tap water safe to drink

I’ll admit, as nervous as I was to travel again, the Go Series water filter bottle reinvigorated my wanderlust tenfold. The Go Series’ advanced two-stage filter improves taste and protects against bacteria, parasites, microplastics, chlorine, silt, sand, and cloudiness. No more worrying about what’s gonna float out of that hotel sink faucet.

I already had a weekend trip this summer and I have a few more on the books. But wasting money on plastic water bottles, drinking questionable tap water, or enduring dry mouth are not options again. LifeStraw solves all of those problems with their filtered water bottle. The bottle filters out all the gunk from airport bathrooms, a tap in Mexico, or a gas station while road-tripping.

2. It’s convenient and environmentally friendly

Most vacations are spent out and about all day long, and the Go Series water filter bottle is built to keep up with you wherever you go. Plan to hike in the mountains for hours? Fill up your water bottle in a nearby stream and continue with your day. Have a robust itinerary with eight spots to visit? Every dingy public restroom is transformed into an oasis. It’s thoughtfully built for all scenarios and vacation types. My husband and I couldn’t stop raving about how useful it was during our first solo getaway back to Chicago recently (I loved it so much that I had to take him), and the double-wall vacuum insulation kept my water cool all day.

Since LifeStraw is proudly a Climate Neutral Certified brand, it’s no surprise that they designed a water bottle that is also environmentally conscious. The Go Series’ membrane microfilter saves 8,000 single-use plastic water bottles—an astounding number that immediately makes it worth the purchase. Plus, for every purchase, a child in need receives safe drinking water for a year.

3. It’s extremely easy to use

I’ll admit I was intimidated about cleaning the Go Series water filter bottle before my first use, but it was much smoother than I anticipated. The water bottle and lid are dishwasher safe but they’re also a breeze to handwash, and the lid screws on and off the membrane microfilter for easy cleaning. The microfilter doesn’t need to be washed with dish detergent or soap, but it will need replacing eventually. However, the microfilter lasts up to 1,000 gallons so there’s a good amount of time between each replacement. It also stops allowing water to flow through once it has reached the end of its lifetime, which means you’ll never have to wonder when it’s time to swap.

Even though it’s designed for traveling, I also love using it on the go for everyday errands. It’s a must when I work remotely from local coffee shops because I can fill up without bugging the barista for a cup of water (my social anxiety girlies get it). After loving it during my weekend trips and daily life, I can’t imagine how much I’ll love it for our upcoming trip to Puerto Rico next year. It’s been eight years since I visited the island and the ability to effortlessly refill for myself and my kids will be incredibly helpful.
