I’m not sure about where you are, but in Seattle we require coats that keep us warm and dry. And as it turns out, a lot of those out there do either/or, and not both. (Why do so many coats lack hoods? Why?) And of course, trying to find those are sustainably made adds an added challenge in a world where polyester reigns supreme (supremely cheap, I mean). So in an effort to find the right coat, I’m narrowing my search to the puffer. They’re pretty much all an investment, but we’re no stranger to expensive outdoor apparel in Seattle. If I am to spend the $$$, though, I want it to be high quality and sustainably made. I’ll probably never decide on one, but here’s the best and most eco-friendly and sustainable puffer jacket designs I’ve come across so far.

12 sustainable puffer jackets for the cold and rain

Halfdays sustainable puffer jacket in lilac @arianaferwerda

Photo by Ariana Ferwerda, the co-founder and CEO of Halfdays

For those in cold weather climates, you’ll want to peruse the whole Halfdays site. Everything looks so warm and chic… perhaps it’s because it’s made for skiiers, designed by fashion-forward women for women.

When I got an ad for the recycled nylon Davis Convertible Jacket – with recycled materials used in the lining, outer, and insulation – I literally stopped what I was doing to add it to this post. I haven’t tried this yet myself but it’s at the top of my list. They also have a packable puffer, Nellie, which comes in different colors. One of the recent reviews says, “Cost per wear girlies should get this jacket”. I mean…

Girlfriend Collective Crystal Packable Puffer

For a lightweight version, Girlfriend Collective’s puffers are made from recycled plastic bottles. There are a few different styles and they are all on sale so get them while you can! (xxs-6xl)

Purple 100% recycled puffer coat from Bernardo

Bernardo Hooded Puffer Jacket is made of recycled polyester. I have a recycled rain jacket from this brand and am really happy with the quality and more affordable price point than many other sustainable coats (wait for a Nordstrom sale or try the Rack!). (xs-xxl) FYI: They do mens as well.

recycled quilted sustainable puffer jacket

I also love this Lite Quilted Coat from them! (xs-xxl)

Backcountry Raglan ALLIED Down Parka is made with 100% recycled polyester and Allied Feather Certified Down. Also in black!

Backcountry Raglan ALLIED Down Parka is made with 100% recycled polyester and Allied Feather Certified Down. Here’s another version they offer. Also in black! (xs-xl) Currently 65% off!

PE nation recycled coat

PE Nation‘s Represent Jacket is a convertible crop puffer jacket made with 100% recycled nylon. This one is sold out but it looks amazing as a vest. (2xs-3xl)

Green Skyline Maxi Hooded Coat from Frank and Oak - where to buy sustainable jackets

The Skyline Maxi Hooded Coat from Frank and Oak comes in four darker neutral colors, and features Thermore® Ecodown® insulation made from recycled plastic bottles. It’s also reversible! It’s this quilted design on the front, but you can also reverse it for a smooth shell and chest pockets. (xs-xl)

Black Frank and Oak winter puffer coat

Frank and Oak’s other winter coat, the Hygge Puffer, is basically designed to feel like you’re wearing a big comfy duvet with its loose fit and shawl hood. Fun note for those who hate carrying their bulky coats around after arriving at their destination: it has a hidden strap so you can wear it like a backpack when you’re inside! (xs-xl)

Pow Recycled Insulated Jacket

Pow Recycled Insulated Jacket from Passenger is 100% recycled right down to the insulation. (xs-xxl)

sustainable puffer jackets

Patagonia Women’s Downdrift Jacket is fair trade and even features recycled down. (xs-xxl)

sustainable puffer jackets

Patagonia also has a parka version for all the sustainable snow bunnies out there. BTW, we all know Patagonia is known for expensive outdoor gear. They are a sustainable company that makes products to last (they even share repair DIY videos to help you keep your clothing out of landfills as long as possible), and the price point really reflects that. Don’t forget to peruse their Worn Wear pre-owned site before buying new, which features secondhand Patagonia gear, in case there’s something for you there. (xxs-xxl)

Norden sustainable puffer jacket

All of Norden’s garments, like the Sky Blue Puffer Jacket, are made with recycled and repurposed materials. (xs-xxl)

Shop more puffer coats below!

I’d love to hear where you shop for sustainable puffer jackets. Let me know and I’ll add to this list! Hopefully we can edit our article soon to add more size-inclusive companies. So few of the ones I found went above a xxl.

It’s cozy season and I’m realizing how many more layers I need in my everyday outfits, unless I’m just going to give up going outside for the next few months… which will be tempting enough once the holidays are over. Luckily one of our favorite fall staples, and coziest fall trend: the womens shirt jacket, is offered in sustainable fabrics and ethical production from a variety of retailers. While I’m all for perusing my local thrift shops for secondhand men’s flannels (they tend to do the trick), I know it can be hit or miss. Here are some more shacket options for those of you shopping online this season. Many of the picks below are unisex or come from brands that offer sustainable mens shirt jackets too, so give each shop a look around!

Outerknown the canyon shirt jacket in denim

Outerknown’s organic cotton Canyon Shacket in worn indigo is the perfect thick denim shacket.

Boucle cozy earth shirt jacket

Cozy Earth’s Bouclé Shacket comes in olive, charcoal gray, and cream. I like that it’s a longer style and perfectly tailored.

turquoise womens flannel shirt jacket

A plaid shacket is a fall staple for everyone. The organic cotton Stella flannel shirt jacket is 50% off right now!

Chroma Blanket Shirt in Chestnut from Outerknown

Chroma Blanket Shirt in Chestnut from Outerknown has a relaxed and textured look.

prana flannel shirt jacket

prAna’s Bridges Flannel Jacket is made from organic cotton with a recycled polyester lining.

tentree recycled fuzzy jacket

Tentree’s recycled fuzzy jacket is probably more jacket than shirt, but depending on where you live, that might just be what you need. Looks so cozy!

Beige Corduroy Womens Shirt Jacket

If you’re looking for a womens shirt jacket of the corduroy variety, this Stoic Overshirt from Backcountry is for you.

woman in cream colored fleece recycled sherpa shacket

This Passenger fleece womens shirt jacket in Oatmeal is made from recycled polyester sherpa fabric. Love all 4 colors!

Orange fall Patagonia fleece womens shirt jacket in recycled polyester

Patagonia’s 100% recycled fleece shirt jacket is nice and thick for those chilly months ahead.

Blue frank + oak french terry womens shirt jacket

For a lighter version, Frank + Oak’s Overshirt comes in French terry that’s 90% organic cotton. It has hidden seam pockets! Frank + Oak has a large selection of men’s overshirts and jackets as well.

Looking for something more weatherproof? See our guide to sustainable puffer jackets here!

100+ websites to shop small

Choosing ethical and sustainable practices is a huge investment for small shops, and it can be a real risk for those with already tight margins. Slow production also means sourcing materials and creating in lower quantities, which can increase costs as well. Keep in mind that no one has it all figured out.

Want to shop small but have your own budget to be mindful of (uh yes!)? Make sure to review each brand’s website for exclusives such as discounts when signing up for their newsletter!

Popping in to share this huge 2024 gift guide I’ve been working on all month. Rather than publish a ton of holiday gift guides, I figured I’d compile it all into one giant resource for those of you intending to shop small and sustainably this gifting season – both for your loved ones who are eco friendly, and those who are not so eco friendly. Everyone can find something to love here!

I know that not everyone can opt for the ethically made gift or sustainable alternative in every situation (I certainly can’t), but every purchase you make to a small business matters so much (as someone with a boutique of her own, I know more than ever). Whatever you can buy from basically anyone but Amazon (and the other giants out there) is making progress toward a more just world. It also shows the recipient (and whoever else may be present during a gift exchange) how special shopping small can be, if you went the extra mile to shop a gift guide like this or go out to your local brick and mortar businesses and seek out that perfect gift. It could inspire them to do the same!

And, if you’re in a place where these gifts aren’t quite right, are out of your price range, you aren’t gifting to anyone who would truly love and appreciate them (I hear you), or aren’t participating in consumerism at all, that’s cool too. If nothing else, now you know about a whole lot of incredible makers and small business owners to think back to if you ever have a need.

Okay, here we go! See below for our 2024 gift guide to womens and mens fashion (for ease of search, you know the person you’re shopping for best and they certainly don’t need to fit into a box), home, beauty and wellness, and lastly baby and kids. Enjoy!!!

2024 gift guides

womens slow fashion 2024 gift guide

sustainable christmas gifts for her

GOTS organic cotton square neck cami by eco club member LA Relaxed is another on my own Christmas wishlist. Good tanks are hard to come by, especially when made ethically and organically, and this is an instant staple. The square neck is back!

Handmade Moroccan raffia slides come in several bold colors, hot pink, green, black, and yellow. Personally torn between the green and pink.

Zella quilted jacket is water resistant, on-trend, and half off! If you’re currently on the hunt for a sustainable puffer jacket for yourself or someone else, also peruse our recently updated mega guide here!

Hemp silk scrunchie from our shop, wallflower.

Baggu puffy fanny pack was a hit in our sustainable fanny packs post, so you likely know someone who would be into it. It’s recycled!

Cuerda one of a kind beaded earrings by Kisiwa are handmade from Japanese glass beads in Seattle. Fun for all those dopamine dressers in your life!

Faded denim jacket by Universal Standard is a beautiful luxury gift for a great price (both for sustainable brands and for denim jackets in general), and it comes in sizes 00—40.

I own this “Let’s Go For A Walk” hat by Flowerhead Hats and everyone I run into seems to love it just as much as I do.

Arctic Fox & Co’s Stockholm scarf is made from 100% recycled materials and comes in solids and plaids. It looks soo cozy on!

The RIB high rise legging two pack from Girlfriend (or any other pair of legging) is a gift they will thank you for, guaranteed. I know because my friends gifted me a pair years ago and I was grateful to have a chance to really test the quality of something I hadn’t brought myself to invest in at the time. If you know someone who’s used to basic fast fashion leggings, these are the best surprise! Girlfriend makes our gift guides every single year.

A big cotton hair bow from Nobody’s Child, a London-based brand that we featured in our holiday dress roundup.

artisan home decor 2024 gift guide

holiday gift guide (or christmas wishlist ideas!) for the home

You can’t go wrong with a set of luxe towels, and this set from Misona is made of bamboo and cotton fibers.

Pretty Pears art print by Sabina Fenn from wallflower is perfect if you know the recipient loves art or flowers, but you’re not totally sure of their style. It’s simple and sweet!

Block print waves throw pillow by eco club member Casa Amarosa looks beautiful in minimalist and maximalist homes alike.

Rangoli tufted lumbar pillow cover in Wine + Pink by Casa Amarosa is for those that love a good pop of color—and artisan made goods.

Kazi’s woven table runner elevates every table with a relaxed elegance in a sweet coral and green palette.

Moi Moli’s velvet pillow from wallflower is soft, cozy, and big on the ruffles. Made by a small Polish business!

Our alpaca throw is another piece I’ve tried myself, and it’s absolutely a step (or ten) up from your typical throw blanket. Light, soft, and luxurious.

Abigail plaid kitchen towel from Archive NY is one of the prettiest plaid patterns I’ve ever seen.

Wolf and Badger’s set of two raffia placemats is another lovely hostess pick.

Pastel woven coaster set by Kazi is a great way to incorporate a natural material without having to forgo color.

A speckled, handpainted cake stand by Egg Back Home, a Portugal-based ceramic studio, which you can find in lavender, yellow, or pink. How fun would this be as a housewarming or wedding gift, too?!

best beauty gifts 2024

clean beauty and wellness 2024 gift guide

Eco club member PAPR cosmetics grapefruit deodorant is a nice little gift for anyone working on a sustainable care package or stocking that’s eco-friendly and nontoxic. I’ve used it and it’s one of the more effective natural brands I’ve tried with unique scents too.

Eu’Genia Essence of Grapefruit Shea Butter comes in a cute tin—super luxurious shea butter in a little package. I have this and use it all winter when my skin is extra dry. Other scents available!

This Detangling Wide Tooth Hair Comb from Solar Eclipse is made from cellulose acetate and who wouldn’t want to see these confetti-inspired hues?

Eco club member Axiology’s Fungdation is the first foundation infused with reishi and snow mushrooms! This is a brand new product so you can almost guarantee they haven’t tried it yet. Axiology is vegan, all natural, zero waste, plastic-free, no nasties, and a small brand with heart, so you can’t go wrong.

We included Kinship Naked Papaya Gentle Enzyme Milky Cleanser and Mint Mud Deep Pore Detox Mask because not only are they adorable and highly rated, everything is packaged with Ocean Waste Plastic. If you couldn’t tell by now, recycled and sustainable packaging can be just as beautiful as its virgin counterparts. If only the rest of the world would figure that out.

Indie Lee Co Q10 Toner is one of my own Christmas wishlist ideas, as I’ve tried and love their face cleanser.

Tower 28 OneLiner Multi-Liner for something trendy that will become a mainstay in their beauty routine. I have their SOS serum and love it too!

Marine greens haircare bundle from Seattle-based Umanos is a plastic-free shampoo and conditioner duo made with bladderwrack, aloe vera, and green tea.

You may know Nopalera from their luxury bar soaps, now take things up a notch with their Cactus Flower Exfoliant.

Everist body wash bundle to elevate their body care and sustainability game. If you haven’t seen it, find our Everist review here where we talk about their shampoo, conditioner, body wash and sponge—and whether they’re worth the price tag.

RMS Beauty eyelight cream eyeshadow comes in four dreamy colors.

Axiology Zero Waste Balmies Superfan Pack is for the one who loves experimenting with beauty and never leaves home without a little glow. There’s a lot packaged into this little box. I own (and love) it, but it doesn’t get as much use as I work from home and only makeup a couple times a week. If you’re gifting for someone like that, opt for one of their trios. Either way, the product itself is awesome and multi-use, for your eyes, skin, face etc.

Sea to Skin cleansing gel from another member Activist Skincare is a great entry to the refillable skincare game.

mens gift ideas 2024

sustainable luxury gifts for men

A 100% recycled patch hat from Prana for the hat guys in your life.

Nisolo mens everyday sneakers are Leather Working Group Certified and handmade in Peru.

Made in a fair trade factory, Pact’s organic cotton terry crew comes in 5 colors. I got my partner this last year and he still wears it.

Frank and Oak’s corduroy pants are made from organic cotton in a nice caramel brown, perfect for fall and winter.

If you’re going for luxury gifts for men, they also offer this quilted jacket made from recycled polyester for a good layering piece.

One more from Frank and Oak, their recycled quilt tote was made for winter errands. Also in my favorite color!

Pact’s woven twill roll up pants are one of those cozy athleisure styles that looks good enough to wear to dinner.

Earth backpack from Terra Thread is made with GOTS certified organic cotton canvas and comes in several bright hues.

I included Fulton’s sustainable insoles because they’re such a creative and practical gift for the active guy or gal that also loves shoes (and thus needs to make all styles as comfortable as possible). And if they love a good sustainable solution – this brand is one they’ll want to know about.

Poplin & Co specializes in artfully designed, responsibly made menswear for the print obsessed. Our 2024 gift guide features their cantaloupe shorts, but they have tons of different prints and styles.

You can’t go wrong with an organic cotton beanie in the wintertime!

Lastly, if you’ve got a holiday wishlist with sustainable undies on it, WAMA’s hemp underwear is eco friendly, size inclusive, and super comfy.

handmade kids 2024 gift guide

cute sustainable baby + kids gift ideas

Kids custom dinosaur name puzzle from Busy Puzzle is good for supporting the development of fine motor skills and it doubles as beautiful nursery décor. Always love a personalized gift for babies!

Responsible Wool Standard merino wool thermal long johns in Dijon from Chasing Windmills comes in sizes from baby to big kid.

The silicone bento boxes from Austin Baby Co come from a mama-owned small business. I have a very pastel thing going, so I chose the lavender, but there are many colors and designs to choose from.

Waffle baby blankets in the cutest colors from Sugar House Swaddles (50% off right now!). This is actually the color palette I want for my bathroom—I found this shop while searching for hand towels. Love the idea of creating a set of these baby blankets to gift using the colors of a baby’s nursery.

Cloud woven wall hanging in retro colors by Tvoye Macrame is the sweetest little nursery gift there ever was, at a wonderful price for something special that’s handmade.

Such a darling handcrafted wooden cat pull toy from DK Wooden Toys. All of their little animal toys are so beautiful!

Pastels for a nursery? Groundbreaking, we know! But our first baby product featured on wallflower, this TBCo recycled baby blanket is the absolute sweetest gift for a new addition to the family!

Soft pink linen cloud pillow by Moi Moli from wallflower would make the loveliest, sustainable baby gift for a nursery, though as someone with pink walls in her living room, you could use it anywhere for a pop of whimsy.

For bigger kids, My Botanical Press by Tender Leaf Press is a wooden flower press that allows kids to collect and preserve flowers and leaves. All of Tender Leaf Press’s toys are so thoughtful, earth-friendly, and creative!

We hope our 2024 gift guide helps you source the most thoughtful and eco-friendly gifts for any loved one on your list. For more ideas on where to shop small this season, check out our updated guide to 100+ small business here, and our directory of sustainable shops here!

Holiday party season is here, and boy do we need some extra cheer as we emotionally prepare for what the new year may bring. When it comes to occasion wear, it’s worth seeing if you can thrift a killer holiday party dress (whether locally or though one of these apps), or maybe find that dream piece on Etsy. And I’m sure you’ll turn heads in something it’s unlikely anyone else is wearing, too! I’m personally not having the best luck with secondhand at the moment, so I’ve been saving dresses I love from my favorite sustainable fashion brands and smaller boutiques. If this is you too, perhaps you’ll find that one gem to wear for your next party and all throughout the season (and seasons) to come. Find our favorite holiday dresses for 2024 below!

black holiday party dress with bows by Nobody's Child

Nobody’s Child is a London-based sustainable fashion brand known for timeless yet trending women’s clothing with flattering silhouettes and feminine details – the type of clothing you will wear for many occasions, not just one party. We’ll share more than a few favorites from them in this post, starting with this black velvet midi dress featuring white bows.

red satin bow-front scoop neck holiday dress

They make use of a lot of innovative fabrics as well as recycled polyester in their designs. This red satin bow-front scoop neck dress is made entirely of recycled polyester, in both the main and lining. Don’t forget the velvet shoes!

blue puff sleeve sustainable dress by nobody's child

Most clothing by Nobody’s Child is in the $75 – $150 range, with outwear and special occasion pieces like this organza balloon sleeve dress (which also comes in red, green, and a gorgeous painterly blue) made of LENZING™ ECOVERO™ Viscose and recycled polyester. If you shop there, be sure to check out their outlet section and if you happen to be in London, they are piloting a clothing rental program.

Red Velvet Jersey Camille Midi Dress

Okay, enough about the brand, let’s get to more dresses! I have to wear velvet every fall (why did velvet go missing from like 2005 to 2015?), it’s just the prettiest material. But it’s not something that can really be made from sustainable materials (that I know of) so if you love velvet too, opt for recycled polyester like this holiday-red dress.

Pink Watercolour Floral Zora Midi Dress

Pink, my favorite holiday party dress hue! This watercolor midi dress has dramatic sleeves and a beautiful shape. I’m considering the mini version for my own party look. Bonus, it’s obviously perfect for Valentine’s Day too.

sustainable red holiday dress

Another sustainable fashion brand with perfect picks for the season, OMNES is designed and made in London. The Blyde red holiday dress is made from deadstock fabric in a fully audited factory. Pleats and cutouts and a cape? Yes please!

pink and red holiday dress

If you love the slip dress trend, this pink dress with red lace, also from OMNES, is made from recycled fabric.

whimsy and row slip dress

Another slip dress option, this time from Whimsy + Row which comes in three shades.

whimsy + row holiday sweater dress

I also love their sparkly holiday sweater dress made from LENZING Modal. You can’t go wrong with a sweater dress!

red tartan plaid holiday dress

A perfectly classic red tartan plaid holiday dress from Dynasty George that’s available in XS-XXL and made from 100% deadstock fabric.

wray shimmer holiday party pants

WRAY’s shimmer pants and top make the perfect holiday party set, made in a fair trade factory, and is available in XXS to 4XL.

christy dawn velvet holiday dress in plus size

This Christy Dawn velvet holiday party dress is the only one on our list that is, um, way out of the $200 range, but it’s so beautiful and one of the few that come in 8 different sizes (I was hoping for short lengths, too, but ya can’t have everything…). A showstopper at any holiday party for seasons to come!

green and pink big bow dresses

cream holiday bow dress

If it’s shiny fabric and oversized bows you’re after, these custom made-to-order dresses (here and here) by Madeline Marie are it. I’m not sure if the fabric has any recycled or eco-friendly fibers in it, but I wanted to include it as custom sizing is so important in fashion and there aren’t enough size-inclusive brands that are also ethical and sustainable for me to share in this post! But small batch and made-to-order is always a more conscious alternative.

size inclusive metallic holiday dress by Tamara Malas

Tamara Malas is another small-batch custom clothing brand with a larger size offering than most. Their Penelope dress (which I’ve shared in a different colorway before) is thoughtfully designed and crafted. Full transparency this is a poly blend fabric.

Happy holiday season!

Hope you like linen. When jumpsuits first came back into fashion a few years ago, I was unabashedly not on board. For one, I am very short. Two, I have to pee all the time. It just seemed complicated. But I’ve since grown a little less apprehensive, especially after seeing how versatile they can be, and that most of the ones I really covet are wrap jumpsuits made of sustainable fabrics like linen and Tencel. I just won’t hydrate those days. (Kidding.)

It’s no surprise that when searching for sustainable wrap jumpsuits you’re bound to come across almost entirely linen options. There are a few others thrown in the mix, but honestly, I think this material lends itself perfectly to the easy breezy style of a wrap. And if you’re gonna have a material that wrinkles, it might as well be something as effortless-looking as linen. Right?

Summer is upon us—the atmospheric river that wiped out power across Seattle early this week is just about dried up, anyway—and my feet are ready for something more warm weather friendly. I wear sneakers 99% of the time, as I walk just about everywhere I go, so I don’t have many options (except my approximately eight year old flip-flops that are best suited for lounging beside me on the beach). Enter, Etsy! Etsy always has unique finds, whether it’s beach kaftans or sun hats, but they make it near impossible to comb through all of the results. Luckily, I’ve learned how to shop Etsy efficiently over the years, so I’m here to help you find what you need. Today it’s the perfect summer sandals and flats, including trendy raffia sandals, that you can get in your size (and for some, even customize). Here are the pairs I’m considering at the moment…

Have I mentioned how happy I am that spring has finally hit Seattle? Any time the sun comes out, I’m out the door. Back in my day, thrifting consisted of hours spent combing the local Goodwill for clothing that was maybe fashionable and definitely cheap. Nowadays, I wouldn’t say I’m a *total* thrifting afficionado (the hobby has completely transformed in today’s atmosphere with secondhand and vintage goods considered elite in Gen Z circles), but I know enough about thrift stores in Los Angeles to help anyone jumpstart their journey locally.

While it’s totally possible for fashion girlies to make a living off of reselling apps like Depop and Mercari, I’m not a huge fan of the “gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss”-ing that’s caused some people to become secretive and purposefully obstructive when it comes to sharing their favorite shops. Thrifting should be a fun, accessible, and affordable experience for anyone who wants to try it out.

best thrift stores in los angeles

Los Angeles Thrift Stores and Consignment Fashion by Budget

So whether you’re looking to dip your toe or plunge head-first into the thrifting scene, here’s a few of the best LA thrift shops to get you started based on your budget.

$$$

2nd Street

If you’re looking for high fashion or rare vintage finds, check out any of the four locations 2nd Street has in the LA area. While not my first choice for affordable thrifting, I’m trying not to yuck anyone else’s yum. Shopping secondhand isn’t always about finding the cheapest piece, but something you’ll love and treasure for years to come. I’d say this is a guaranteed spot for well-worn leather jackets and a unique luxury statement piece for your wardrobe. 2nd Street also has locations in several other major US cities.

Wasteland

With there LA shops (and one in San Francisco), there’s no shortage of designer fashion offered at Wasteland. They specialize in designer, vintage, and independent labels and are more carefully edited than the more budget-friendly options below. If you love to stay on top of the latest trends, Wasteland is the place to shop.

$$

Buffalo Exchange

With multiple locations in LA, Buffalo Exchange feels like the elevated version of a Goodwill. They tend to have hip cashiers and mid-range priced clothing, but sometimes you can find something unique if you’re willing to dig (case in point, I’m pretty sure I found the original scarf from the 2006 classic, Penelope, like 10 years ago). I’d say the style skews slightly kitschy compared to the more generically appealing vibe or Crossroads.

Crossroads Trading Co

For those that like the prices of Goodwill and Salvation Army, but dislike the idea of spending hours thrifting at either, Crossroads is probably your best bet. Crossroads is a similar price point (gone are the days where Goodwill priced everything under one umbrella—they know a good brand when they get it), without as much rummaging to get there. With 9 locations in the LA area, chances are you’re right near one, but don’t be afraid to venture to the others when your neighborhood shop falls short.

Silverlake Flea

If you want to look cool and get a good pic for your IG, Silverlake Flea is the spot. While there are some good finds (like my favorite pair of vintage Levi’s I snagged for $30), it’s a mixed bag of small business owners and bulk resellers. Silverlake Flea very much gives me the “hip” vibe, and is probably what most people would imagine when thinking of what a flea market in LA is like—trendy, curated, but still full of surprises.

Rose Bowl Flea Market

People travel from miles away to experience LA’s Rose Bowl Flea Market. The whole market is MASSIVE, and you can find almost anything you could possibly imagine: funky windbreakers, brass chandeliers, and even 5ft tall Monstera plants. You’ll spend at least two hours there (or half the day if you’re really hunting), scooping up everything from reworked vintage clothing to home goods to artwork from local vendors. Bring cash for admission and vendors, although most also accept Venmo.

And a word of warning: if you don’t get there early you’re basically as likely to get a parking spot as you are to win the lottery. But despite that *very* LA-esque problem, the Rose Bowl Flea Market is definitely an experience I’d recommend.

Melrose Trading Post

The other most popular LA flea market is the Melrose flea at Fairfax High School every Sunday. This is an impressive market to have access to every single week! You’ll see some of the same vendors from the Rose Bowl here, though this market is a much more manageable size. Spend the morning combing through Levi’s cutoffs, vintage décor, and local art before heading over to brunch on Melrose. Admission is $6 and if you live in LA it’s worth stopping by every few months to see new offerings.

$

Out of the Closet

Out of the Closet is like the gay-friendly version of Salvation Army. Their mission to support the LGBTQIA+ community means that all 4 LA locations offer free HIV testing, and that the business donates 96 cents of every dollar to AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s HIV prevention and treatment services. Like most of the LA thrift shops on this list, they have several locations throughout the city and beyond, and are one of the few chains that still feels like a true thrift store.

In my experience, the prices were pretty reasonable, and I scored a decent amount of clothing the last time I went.

Valley Value Center (& Thrifting in the Valley)

You know that a thrift store is a hidden gem when they have no website to speak of. While I’ve never been to Valley Value Center in Van Nuys, the number of TikTokers I’ve seen try and gatekeep this store leads me to believe it’s a thrifting heaven for anyone willing to wade through the racks. The Van Nuys and Reseda areas both boast a handful of thrift stores if you’re willing to spend a day driving around the Valley. The perk? Most, if not all, of them will be cheaper than anything you find in town. Map out your route beforehand and make a big loop before heading back into the city.

St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles

Another store I’ve head of secondhand, that IS right in the city is St Vincent’s. St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles is apparently a treasure trove of clothes, furniture, and accessories located in the heart of LA. And while I can’t 100% vouch for the prices, St. Vincent de Paul’s are usually known as some of the more affordable thrift stores you’ll find.

Which Los Angeles thrift shops should we add to this list? No gatekeeping here!
