We are so excited to present you our annual guide, updated for 2024, featuring 100+ websites to shop small for ethical and sustainable gift ideas this season + beyond! All shops are #ecoclubapproved, meaning they are independently owned, support ethical production or handmade techniques, and practice sustainability. Of course, sustainability is a spectrum, this list contains both zero waste brands and those who are passionate about sustainability but still have a ways to go–and with your support will get there! This post has been updated for the 2024 gifting season to omit any shops no longer operating and include those we’ve found and loved this year.

100+ Websites to Shop Small for Ethical & Sustainable Gift Ideas (Home, Lifestyle, Fashion, Beauty, & Wellness) via eco club

100+ websites to shop small

Choosing ethical and sustainable practices is a huge investment for small shops, and it can be a real risk for those with already tight margins. Slow production also means sourcing materials and creating in lower quantities, which can increase costs as well. Keep in mind that no one has it all figured out.

Want to shop small but have your own budget to be mindful of (uh yes!)? Make sure to review each brand’s website for exclusives such as discounts when signing up for their newsletter!

Popping in to share this huge 2024 gift guide I’ve been working on all month. Rather than publish a ton of holiday gift guides, I figured I’d compile it all into one giant resource for those of you intending to shop small and sustainably this gifting season – both for your loved ones who are eco friendly, and those who are not so eco friendly. Everyone can find something to love here!

I know that not everyone can opt for the ethically made gift or sustainable alternative in every situation (I certainly can’t), but every purchase you make to a small business matters so much (as someone with a boutique of her own, I know more than ever). Whatever you can buy from basically anyone but Amazon (and the other giants out there) is making progress toward a more just world. It also shows the recipient (and whoever else may be present during a gift exchange) how special shopping small can be, if you went the extra mile to shop a gift guide like this or go out to your local brick and mortar businesses and seek out that perfect gift. It could inspire them to do the same!

And, if you’re in a place where these gifts aren’t quite right, are out of your price range, you aren’t gifting to anyone who would truly love and appreciate them (I hear you), or aren’t participating in consumerism at all, that’s cool too. If nothing else, now you know about a whole lot of incredible makers and small business owners to think back to if you ever have a need.

Okay, here we go! See below for our 2024 gift guide to womens and mens fashion (for ease of search, you know the person you’re shopping for best and they certainly don’t need to fit into a box), home, beauty and wellness, and lastly baby and kids. Enjoy!!!

2024 gift guides

womens slow fashion 2024 gift guide

sustainable christmas gifts for her

GOTS organic cotton square neck cami by eco club member LA Relaxed is another on my own Christmas wishlist. Good tanks are hard to come by, especially when made ethically and organically, and this is an instant staple. The square neck is back!

Handmade Moroccan raffia slides come in several bold colors, hot pink, green, black, and yellow. Personally torn between the green and pink.

Zella quilted jacket is water resistant, on-trend, and half off! If you’re currently on the hunt for a sustainable puffer jacket for yourself or someone else, also peruse our recently updated mega guide here!

Hemp silk scrunchie from our shop, wallflower.

Baggu puffy fanny pack was a hit in our sustainable fanny packs post, so you likely know someone who would be into it. It’s recycled!

Cuerda one of a kind beaded earrings by Kisiwa are handmade from Japanese glass beads in Seattle. Fun for all those dopamine dressers in your life!

Faded denim jacket by Universal Standard is a beautiful luxury gift for a great price (both for sustainable brands and for denim jackets in general), and it comes in sizes 00—40.

I own this “Let’s Go For A Walk” hat by Flowerhead Hats and everyone I run into seems to love it just as much as I do.

Arctic Fox & Co’s Stockholm scarf is made from 100% recycled materials and comes in solids and plaids. It looks soo cozy on!

The RIB high rise legging two pack from Girlfriend (or any other pair of legging) is a gift they will thank you for, guaranteed. I know because my friends gifted me a pair years ago and I was grateful to have a chance to really test the quality of something I hadn’t brought myself to invest in at the time. If you know someone who’s used to basic fast fashion leggings, these are the best surprise! Girlfriend makes our gift guides every single year.

A big cotton hair bow from Nobody’s Child, a London-based brand that we featured in our holiday dress roundup.

artisan home decor 2024 gift guide

holiday gift guide (or christmas wishlist ideas!) for the home

You can’t go wrong with a set of luxe towels, and this set from Misona is made of bamboo and cotton fibers.

Pretty Pears art print by Sabina Fenn from wallflower is perfect if you know the recipient loves art or flowers, but you’re not totally sure of their style. It’s simple and sweet!

Block print waves throw pillow by eco club member Casa Amarosa looks beautiful in minimalist and maximalist homes alike.

Rangoli tufted lumbar pillow cover in Wine + Pink by Casa Amarosa is for those that love a good pop of color—and artisan made goods.

Kazi’s woven table runner elevates every table with a relaxed elegance in a sweet coral and green palette.

Moi Moli’s velvet pillow from wallflower is soft, cozy, and big on the ruffles. Made by a small Polish business!

Our alpaca throw is another piece I’ve tried myself, and it’s absolutely a step (or ten) up from your typical throw blanket. Light, soft, and luxurious.

Abigail plaid kitchen towel from Archive NY is one of the prettiest plaid patterns I’ve ever seen.

Wolf and Badger’s set of two raffia placemats is another lovely hostess pick.

Pastel woven coaster set by Kazi is a great way to incorporate a natural material without having to forgo color.

A speckled, handpainted cake stand by Egg Back Home, a Portugal-based ceramic studio, which you can find in lavender, yellow, or pink. How fun would this be as a housewarming or wedding gift, too?!

best beauty gifts 2024

clean beauty and wellness 2024 gift guide

Eco club member PAPR cosmetics grapefruit deodorant is a nice little gift for anyone working on a sustainable care package or stocking that’s eco-friendly and nontoxic. I’ve used it and it’s one of the more effective natural brands I’ve tried with unique scents too.

Eu’Genia Essence of Grapefruit Shea Butter comes in a cute tin—super luxurious shea butter in a little package. I have this and use it all winter when my skin is extra dry. Other scents available!

This Detangling Wide Tooth Hair Comb from Solar Eclipse is made from cellulose acetate and who wouldn’t want to see these confetti-inspired hues?

Eco club member Axiology’s Fungdation is the first foundation infused with reishi and snow mushrooms! This is a brand new product so you can almost guarantee they haven’t tried it yet. Axiology is vegan, all natural, zero waste, plastic-free, no nasties, and a small brand with heart, so you can’t go wrong.

We included Kinship Naked Papaya Gentle Enzyme Milky Cleanser and Mint Mud Deep Pore Detox Mask because not only are they adorable and highly rated, everything is packaged with Ocean Waste Plastic. If you couldn’t tell by now, recycled and sustainable packaging can be just as beautiful as its virgin counterparts. If only the rest of the world would figure that out.

Indie Lee Co Q10 Toner is one of my own Christmas wishlist ideas, as I’ve tried and love their face cleanser.

Tower 28 OneLiner Multi-Liner for something trendy that will become a mainstay in their beauty routine. I have their SOS serum and love it too!

Marine greens haircare bundle from Seattle-based Umanos is a plastic-free shampoo and conditioner duo made with bladderwrack, aloe vera, and green tea.

You may know Nopalera from their luxury bar soaps, now take things up a notch with their Cactus Flower Exfoliant.

Everist body wash bundle to elevate their body care and sustainability game. If you haven’t seen it, find our Everist review here where we talk about their shampoo, conditioner, body wash and sponge—and whether they’re worth the price tag.

RMS Beauty eyelight cream eyeshadow comes in four dreamy colors.

Axiology Zero Waste Balmies Superfan Pack is for the one who loves experimenting with beauty and never leaves home without a little glow. There’s a lot packaged into this little box. I own (and love) it, but it doesn’t get as much use as I work from home and only makeup a couple times a week. If you’re gifting for someone like that, opt for one of their trios. Either way, the product itself is awesome and multi-use, for your eyes, skin, face etc.

Sea to Skin cleansing gel from another member Activist Skincare is a great entry to the refillable skincare game.

mens gift ideas 2024

sustainable luxury gifts for men

A 100% recycled patch hat from Prana for the hat guys in your life.

Nisolo mens everyday sneakers are Leather Working Group Certified and handmade in Peru.

Made in a fair trade factory, Pact’s organic cotton terry crew comes in 5 colors. I got my partner this last year and he still wears it.

Frank and Oak’s corduroy pants are made from organic cotton in a nice caramel brown, perfect for fall and winter.

If you’re going for luxury gifts for men, they also offer this quilted jacket made from recycled polyester for a good layering piece.

One more from Frank and Oak, their recycled quilt tote was made for winter errands. Also in my favorite color!

Pact’s woven twill roll up pants are one of those cozy athleisure styles that looks good enough to wear to dinner.

Earth backpack from Terra Thread is made with GOTS certified organic cotton canvas and comes in several bright hues.

I included Fulton’s sustainable insoles because they’re such a creative and practical gift for the active guy or gal that also loves shoes (and thus needs to make all styles as comfortable as possible). And if they love a good sustainable solution – this brand is one they’ll want to know about.

Poplin & Co specializes in artfully designed, responsibly made menswear for the print obsessed. Our 2024 gift guide features their cantaloupe shorts, but they have tons of different prints and styles.

You can’t go wrong with an organic cotton beanie in the wintertime!

Lastly, if you’ve got a holiday wishlist with sustainable undies on it, WAMA’s hemp underwear is eco friendly, size inclusive, and super comfy.

handmade kids 2024 gift guide

cute sustainable baby + kids gift ideas

Kids custom dinosaur name puzzle from Busy Puzzle is good for supporting the development of fine motor skills and it doubles as beautiful nursery décor. Always love a personalized gift for babies!

Responsible Wool Standard merino wool thermal long johns in Dijon from Chasing Windmills comes in sizes from baby to big kid.

The silicone bento boxes from Austin Baby Co come from a mama-owned small business. I have a very pastel thing going, so I chose the lavender, but there are many colors and designs to choose from.

Waffle baby blankets in the cutest colors from Sugar House Swaddles (50% off right now!). This is actually the color palette I want for my bathroom—I found this shop while searching for hand towels. Love the idea of creating a set of these baby blankets to gift using the colors of a baby’s nursery.

Cloud woven wall hanging in retro colors by Tvoye Macrame is the sweetest little nursery gift there ever was, at a wonderful price for something special that’s handmade.

Such a darling handcrafted wooden cat pull toy from DK Wooden Toys. All of their little animal toys are so beautiful!

Pastels for a nursery? Groundbreaking, we know! But our first baby product featured on wallflower, this TBCo recycled baby blanket is the absolute sweetest gift for a new addition to the family!

Soft pink linen cloud pillow by Moi Moli from wallflower would make the loveliest, sustainable baby gift for a nursery, though as someone with pink walls in her living room, you could use it anywhere for a pop of whimsy.

For bigger kids, My Botanical Press by Tender Leaf Press is a wooden flower press that allows kids to collect and preserve flowers and leaves. All of Tender Leaf Press’s toys are so thoughtful, earth-friendly, and creative!

We hope our 2024 gift guide helps you source the most thoughtful and eco-friendly gifts for any loved one on your list. For more ideas on where to shop small this season, check out our updated guide to 100+ small business here, and our directory of sustainable shops here!

If you’ve come across this post while searching for sustainable alternatives to Anthropologie home, you probably already know why they are a problematic company (as well as Urban Outfitters, which owns Anthro, Free People, BHLDN, and Terrain. Ugh.). From their “not good enough” rating on Goodonyou to claims of racial profiling in stores (and racism in the workplace) to lack of transparency in production and their CEO’s disconcerting political donations, to finally straight up ripping off independent artists for years (this latest instance comes to mind), there are many reasons one might feel just a little icky about supporting Anthro. But… Their brand, their offerings. So beautiful, right?

It’s ironic of course that Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban all cater to more progressive minded shoppers, who love their globally “influenced” style and easygoing vibe. In the midst of various greenwashing techniques, they do partner with independent artists–just, I suppose, the ones they’re not stealing from. (And no, I’m not asserting that the exposure this provides for an artist is something one could or should consider turning down.)

rainbow tbco recycled wool blanket by wallflower shop
A colorful blanket by sustainable home brand TBCo, available at wallflower.

Many of my peers know at least some of this to be true, but if it’s not Anthro’s captivating branding drawing them in, it’s this thought that there is definitively no other option for those who desire this so extremely coveted look. But given the fact that these brands succeed by ripping off other artists’ designs, I do know there indeed are options.

So, if you love Anthropologie home decor, but not their ethics, this post is for you. The caveat is that there currently isn’t one single marketplace to get all of the dreamy decor AND fashion Anthro fans love. But there are some that offer one or the other (and you can find the sustainable fashion alternatives here!), and other indie designers to fill in the gaps. So yeah, it’s definitely harder to curate, but it IS a worthy option, to choose three or four of these shops rather than the URBN empire.

Let’s begin with 10 ethical alternatives for Anthropologie home decor…

Archive New York

Archive New York, who we’ve mentioned before as a great spot for conscious maximalist decor and ethically made rugs, is a beautiful stop for handwoven artisan home goods as well as vintage & market finds.

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

White and Orange Kitchen Towel

wallflower

wallflower is a brand created by eco club founders Jennifer and Angela (me!). It’s a small online boutique dedicated to objects, makers, and spaces that inspire. Perhaps not everything (we’re a bit quirky and we love it!), but many of our home decor selections follow a similar aesthetic: artisan, playful, whimsical, and refined. (If you choose to visit our shop, thank you in advance!!!)

We have a collection of design-inspired coffee table books

green and pink porcelain plates on maximalist taable

As well as a selection of handmade and ethically sourced decor and tabletop goods such as these porcelain plates, woven table runner, and candle holders. Shop all here!

Baba Souk

Our next sustainable alternative to Anthropologie, Canada-based Baba Souk is a beautifully curated online store for Moroccan made decor and rugs, kids decor, art, and lots of lifestyle goodies that make great gifts. They’re totally the refined boho look that Anthro offers, except you know, authentic.

Terracotta Sabra Silk Cactus Pillow

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Turquoise Sabra Silk Pillows – Handmade from Morocco

Goodee

Goodee is an inclusive global marketplace where good design and good purpose intersect. They have such a large selection that not all of it vibes with Anthro… but the fact that they do carry pretty much every category Anthro has when it comes to lifestyle & décor, makes it a great alternative.

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Eperara Siapidara Set of Twelve PET Lamps

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Pakurigo Basket – Natural

Pillowpia

New York based Pillowpia is a mecca of gorgeous, sustainable pillows and soft goods. With cozy neutrals accented by pinks, blues, and orange hues, you can achieve the Anthro look with a conscience. Recently they’ve expanded to offer tech accessories, beauty and self care, and clothing too.

sustainable pillows & home decor by pillowpia - collage of pastel pillows

Look at these gorgeous pastel pillows!

pillowpia's lilac placemats

Besides the pillows, I’m also obsessed with these gorgeous placemats.

Koskela

Australia based Koskela is a quality homeware and furniture shop. Everything in their design-forward catalog is made in Australia. (Note, only the decor is available for international shipping, the larger items are available Australia-wide.) They’re certainly more high-end than many shops featured here, but feature original artwork and craftsmanship.

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Minna Cartographer Pillow from Koskela

Better World Arts Cushion – Mitjili Napurrula from Koskela

Minzuu

Social enterprise Minzuu offers a gorgeous, extensive variety of globally inspired homewares from baskets and vases to bedding, bath, and entertaining. Their overall brand has a sophisticated, somewhat minimal look to it, so it doesn’t scream Anthropologie at first glance. But as you look through their selection, you find so many colors and textures to curate that sustainable, yet maximalist home. Learn all about their process on the Minzuu blog.

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Minzuu Sunny Day Coasters

Side note: I wanted to mention that Minzuu and a handful of the other sustainable decor shops featured here carry baskets, pendants, and accessories like the coasters above from social enterprise Kazi Goods. They offer many accents that fit the Anthropologie look, and I love how the different shops curate from their selection. We even have a few of Kazi’s pieces on wallflower!

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Plant Dyed Linen Table Runner

Pampa

Australian home decor brand Pampa is known for their textiles, rugs, and other sustainable goods. Their pieces are made by artisans in Argentina, and they ship worldwide. While they do carry some luxury pieces, a lot of their prices are comparable to Anthro, and even better if you consider how long each item will last.

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Pampa Monte Pom Pom Cushion

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Monte Bolster Pom Pom Pillow

Tribe

We came across Tribe Bohemian Home on Instagram right before writing our conscious maximalism home decor piece, and I think we just have to include them in every guide we write from here on out! Tribe is a curated collection of both US and internationally crafted goods made from sustainable and recycled materials in mesmerizing patterns, cozy textures, and playful colorways. New collections launch monthly so be sure to sign up for Sonal’s email list for updates!

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Coral Pink Moroccan Floor Poufs

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Faded Pink Moroccan Cactus Silk Pillow

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Macrame Planter Set Black + Blush + Green

St Frank

St Frank is a design-driven luxury home goods brand featuring only artisan and ethically made goods. They’re on the pricier end of the companies featured here, but offer custom made decor and textiles, a vintage collection, one-of-a-kind objects, and a virtual styling service. Did I mention they offer wallpaper?!

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Sustainable Alternatives for Anthropologie Home Decor

Blush Daisy Suzani Throw Pillow

Pink Diamond Huipil Lumbar Pillow

Where do you shop for ethically made home decor? I know there are plenty of bloggers with their own lists of sustainable alternatives to Anthropologie, but I felt many of them struggled a bit to match up the actual style of their products. Super important to the Anthro shopper, I know! I hope these provided a few new-to-you options.

For more ethical home goods, be sure to stop by the eco boutique! This page is a colorful, design-forward collection of products we’ve curated from independent brands, Etsy sellers, and other sustainable sources, updated monthly.

Welp, it’s the first 78 degree day of the year in Seattle and I’m clearing my balcony of all the debris (and spider webs) that gathered over the last 7 months of underuse. Balcony season is here! We’ve shared many a sustainable rug guide here on eco club, from where to buy ethically made rugs to these beautiful Etsy rugs, but this is our first time looking specifically at the outdoor variety. Recycled outdoor rugs are actually much easier to come by than their indoor-only counterparts, mostly because recycled plastic makes a great material for textiles that need to withstand the elements versus traditional cotton or wool. That said, during my research I found so many labeled recycled indoor/outdoor rugs, and honestly I figured that probably meant they’d look a little funky (and not comfy) inside. But to my surprise the rug I ended up going with for my balcony could totally work inside, it’s soft and beautiful! Can you guess which recycled plastic outdoor rug I went with in the end?

From top to bottom, left to right: Poolside Geo Blue Indoor/Outdoor Rug, Nassau Multicolor Hand Hooked Floral Area Rug, Zanzibar Ticking Handwoven Indoor/Outdoor Rug, Horseshoes Flatweave Outdoor Rug, Loomy Chromatic, Thera Green Rug, Folly Multi Handwoven Indoor/Outdoor Rug (on sale!), Seed Stitch Stripe Watermelon Handwoven Rug, Framed Arrows Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Where to buy recycled outdoor rugs…

Bole Road Textiles multi colored recycled plastic outdoor rugs

Bole Road Textiles Stripe & Step Indoor/Outdoor Rug

West Elm

Most West Elm outdoor rugs are made from recycled polyester (be sure to scroll down and click the “details” tab to confirm), like the blue geo and framed arrows ones above. A lot of them are West Elm’s in-house brands, but you can find collabs with designers like Marimekko, and Bole Road Textiles featuring recycled indoor/outdoor rugs that are also Certified Fair Trade and sustainably sourced.

Recycled outdoor rugs from Dash & Albert

Dash & Albert

Annie Selkie brand Dash & Albert features a large collection of recycled plastic outdoor rugs (again, find the details tab to confirm) in playful vibrant hues just made for summer hangs. Like West Elm and most of the rugs featured in this guide, they are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use—they’re just deemed durable enough for decorating your outdoor space.

Fab Habitat is a brand I found while searching for recycled outdoor rugs, and they’re behind the pretty floral one featured above. You can find Good Weave certified eco friendly rugs on their site, many of which are pet friendly and stain resistant because of the recycled PET. This brand was founded with the mission of providing a sustainable rug option to the US, so even the products that don’t featured recycled plastic bottles use natural fibers or other sustainable materials.

loomy colorful striped rug made with plastic bottles

Loomy

Loomy offers high end, ethically produced artisan rugs made from various materials such as wool and banana silk (like in this gorgeous pastel rug) but they also feature a few indoor/outdoor options that are made from 100% recycled PET, like the chromatic rug. Their rugs are made to order so make sure you buy with enough time before summer kicks off!

horseshoe ombre revival outdoor rug

Revival

Revival has a huge selection of rugs, from washable to vintage to those suitable for outdoor use. I’m not sure if they are all made from sustainable materials, so once again, be sure to look for those made with recycled plastic if you want it to be outdoor friendly, recycled, and durable. They have outdoor rugs made from 100% recycled P.E.T. (polyethylene terephthalate, i.e. polyester), so search for that if you’re on the hunt for recycled outdoor rugs!

revival horseshoe ombre recycled outdoor rug with peony

My new rug! I fell in love with the Horseshoes Flatweave Outdoor Rug (above) during my search. The 5×8′ size (the one I ordered) is made from up to 500 plastic water bottles! Wild. It has color variations of rose quartz, powder blue, and goldenrod yellow. Hoping to get the rest of my patio cleaned up soon to share a better photo. As mentioned above, I wasn’t so sure about whether indoor/outdoor rugs would actually look good and feel cozy enough for indoor use, but this one totally does. It’s very soft and well made. When I first received it, I was tempted to keep it inside so I could enjoy it year round!

world market orange recycled outdoor mat

World Market floor mats are a nice option if you just need something super affordable (under $50) to cover a large area outside.

World Market

For perhaps the most affordable outdoor rug options, try World Market. I know they are far from leaders in sustainably produced products, but in this category they do offer a lot of recycled options, from area rugs to floor mats. I’ll say it one more time—make sure to read the full description of the rugs you’re looking at to ensure they are indeed recycled!

Don’t forget secondhand!

Lastly, whenever you are eyeing a product online it’s worth sitting on it for a bit and searching places like Marketplace, OfferUp, Craigslist etc., to see if someone is selling that same product locally. I’ve seen tons of West Elm and World Market rugs pop up in my city’s listings, sometimes in new condition. In the end I opted for something different, but you never know when a neighbor actually owns the one you want, and is giving it away for cheap or free!

Isn’t it wild that water bottles can become yarn? Find more of our favorite places to shop for ethically made rugs in this guide.

Hope you’re having a wonderful holiday season thus far. The Black Friday and Thanksgiving sale madness is over, and I’m grateful to everyone who supported small business this season! I sort of dropped the ball on sharing my favorites on Instagram (this time of year isn’t just overwhelming IRL, but on social media too), but if you stopped by the blog last week you saw our annual guide to 100+ websites to shop small, and this mega gift guide to sustainable gifts for men, women, kids, home and more. Well I have one more gift guide for you today, this from our very own boutique, wallflower, run by yours truly (Angela and Jenn). But it’s not so much about the gifts as what you’ll wrap them in and what you’ll display! Here’s our guide to eco friendly Christmas decor and gift wrap essentials from wallflower:

eco friendly christmas decor + holiday gift wrap from wallflower shop

This is our second holiday season as shop owners, and this year our holiday shop is filled to the brim with all of the whimsical pieces we could get our hands on. It’s filled with lots of decor and gifting supplies for thoughtful holiday presents! We also have lots of holiday greeting cards. Our most eco friendly Christmas decor and gifting treasures include this box of Season’s Greetings cards and mismatched holiday gift tags and wrap. They come in a compostable cello wrap and recycled boxes. The tags and wrap also have a subtle holiday design so they could totally be reused for other occasions throughout the year.

ribbon bow coupe glass for eco friendly christmas decor and party ideas

Last year’s photo of my vintage pink depression glass coupe (which is in just about every photo shoot I’ve done in the last six years) and this luxe little scrap of ribbon was a hit on Pinterest. I think one of 2023’s biggest holiday trends is bows on bows on bows, and using bows as a wine tag (think a different color for each guest at your party) is a creative way to channel it. Plus, you can reuse them (assuming there’s no spills) for the Christmas tree bow trend or your gift wrap. Loooove an easy trend that you can use with what’s on hand!

kazi handwoven pastel ornaments - where to buy eco friendly christmas decor

This year we have lots of handwoven ornaments by KAZI in the shop too. They make some of the cutest eco friendly Christmas decor and gifts. These are also perfect for display in a nursery, we think!

pink and green eco gift wrap from wallflower shop

Our wrapping paper sheets from Wanderlust Paper Co are also perfect not only for the holidays but any occasion afterward. These are responsibly printed on sustainable paper (as is all of our holiday wrapping paper). We’ve sourced a lot of our gift wrap and greeting cards from UK artists in the past couple years and it’s really exciting to bring these vendors to a US boutique. They all follow sustainable business practices like biodegradable sleeves (what is our obsession with plastic greeting card sleeves in the US???) and packing tape, recyclable gift wrap, etc.

This Moroccan-inspired pink and green wrapping paper is another design we have that works beautifully during the holidays and beyond. Shop our entire holiday collection right here!

Big thanks to eco club member Baba Souk for sponsoring this post. We’ve included their Moroccan rugs in past guides and really appreciate the opportunity to dive into more detail about this fun brand!

It’s no secret that I love to talk rugs around here. Searching for ethically sourced rugs several years ago set off an obsession with this homeware staple and eventually I began to share my favorites. First, our guide to ethically made rugs online, and later I got even more specific and shared the best ones from top brands. And each time I’d round up my favorites, Baba Souk rugs would top the list. They were always on the more colorful end, especially when it comes to pastel rugs that fit my aesthetic.

Today we’re getting even more specific about these special pieces and why Baba Souk is such a great place for sourcing artisan-made Moroccan rugs and decor if you live in the US or Canada (where you can enjoy FREE shipping on purchases over $100!). Thanks to their founder and owner Stephanie for filling me in!

Baba Souk pink checker Moroccan rug

Baba Souk is an online destination for artisan made Moroccan home decor best known for their nursery rugs, wool rugs, and most recently their line of rugs made from 100% recycled cotton… including this blush pink checkered rug! It’s available in three sizes, made to order, and also can be customized if you have a specific shade request! Love this as an area rug for a bright living room.

pastel nursery rug and colorful nursery room from baba souk

As you can imagine, the shop is a popular destination for artisan made nursery rugs! Their pastel hues obviously lend beautifully to bright, cheerful spaces like those you’d design for a new baby. Stephanie recommends their cotton line for nurseries or kids rooms, as they are super duper easy to clean.

Baba Souk Moroccan rugs collection

As mentioned, some of their rugs are made-to-order by their team of artisans in Morocco but the majority of the rugs you see online are in stock. They also have a loft you can visit if ever you’re heading to Montreal!

neutral area rugs for the living room - talking moroccan rugs with baba souk

About Baba Souk

Let’s talk history. Baba Souk founder Stephanie fell in love with Moroccan rugs during her first visit to Marrakech, where her husband was born and raised, back in 2011. Her husband knew many local artists and Stephanie began to think of how she could not only bring a bit of Morocco back home, but share their talents with people abroad. Now, after ten years in business, Stephanie not only curates her rug collection, but works with her team of artisans to develop custom pieces. She’s a former clothing designer, so this work is totally up her alley!

Why Moroccan rugs?

Besides their creative designs, Baba Souk is committed to offering rugs that help combat throwaway culture. These rugs are made to last. They invite you to design a space you’ll love in the long term…not one you’ll look at in a year and want to completely replace everything in.

It helps to know how to care for the rug you want, so you can check out this guide while choosing a type (wool, cotton etc) It may feel a bit daunting to invest in a new area rug, but it’s easier when you know your rug is going to last at least a decade! And it can even be something you give another life to by selling or donating afterward, in your local community.

pastel bedroom ideas and colorful rug

On Baba Souk, you can shop by rug size and fabric to find the perfect one to suit your needs.

Moroccan rug sustainability

Their wool rugs are still 100% handcrafted using ethical production, but if you’re looking specifically for rugs made of sustainable materials, that’s where their recycled cotton Boucherouite rug collection comes in. These rugs are made of leftover fabric scraps from clothing factories in Casablanca where many fast fashion brands produce their pieces (and waste). This gives them a fluffier texture than you might think of when it comes to cotton rugs.

pink checkerboard rug

pink checkerboard rug with cute coffee table

I can see these as nursery rugs OR in any adult space… Maybe it’s just me, but I think every room can benefit from a colorful statement pieces. But! If you love the look in a more neutral palette, their Beni Ourain rugs are a gorgeous choice:

moroccan beni rugs from baba souk in pastel danish style living room with marble coffee table

You probably know that Moroccan rug designs, like the thick and fuzzy Beni Ourain variety, are trending right now. But the copycat designs being developed by big box stores are merely attempting to recreate the look… not the details or craftsmanship. Stephanie says, It’s easy to tell when it’s not the real thing. Moroccan rugs are hard to duplicate because they are 100% handmade. A machine-manufactured rug is just too straight, too white, too shiny, and has so much less appeal. Our handmade Moroccan rugs are the coziest thing you’ll ever step on. Super thick and hand-knotted with luxurious wool.

cute pastel workspace with white design and colorful rug

If you’re like me, you’re probably dreaming up all the nooks in crannies in your home that might suddenly *need* a rug.

moroccan beni ourain rug with pink and blue diamonds

A joyful source of color and artisan made goodies since 2012, Baba Souk now offers not only rugs, but bath mats, pillows, poufs, baskets, and decor. I could honestly spend hours on their website and am so excited to welcome them to our ethical shopping directory! If you feel the same, be sure to use code ECOCLUB for 20% off your rug order!

Find them at babasouk.ca and in our directory here

Jenn and I have had this post on our calendar for so long, but there really are so many good vintage stores in Portland that it’s hard to consider “the best”. We wanted to finally share it with you, so we’ll consider this a post-in-progress and continue to update as we know we’ve forgotten (and not yet discovered) many! The vintage shops below range from antique malls to speciality fashion stores to curated boutiques offering both new and vintage treasures. Hope you find your new favorite spot for vintage below!

the best vintage stores in portland, oregon

artifact vintage portland

One of the trendiest vintage stores in Portland (with good reason), Artifact Creative Recycle is a consignment shop for all things vintage and very cool. They’ve evolved a lot over the years, and it seems like they’ve started to focus on fashion more than decor as of late but still offer both. I make a point to stop here every time I’m in the city, and it seems like I always walk away with one cool (and affordable) piece that I never regret! Once it was a big sparkly vintage overcoat and another time a black jumpsuit that actually fit my short legs.

clothing racks at House of Vintage Portland

House of Vintage PDX in Hawthorne is a collective of over 60 dealers selling their best vintage in a 13,000 sq ft space. They’re known for their vintage fashion and accessories ranging from antique 1920s to Y2K. On the Washington side of the bridge, you can also find a House of Vintage location in Vancouver! They specialize in mid-mod furniture, decor, and clothing.

zig zag portland vintage store

Zig Zag Vintage is a curated vintage clothing store on NE Alberta, that also offers modern and locally made goods, as well as reworked vintage, some of which you can find for sale on their Instagram.

psychic sister vintage in portland, or
Photo by Whitney W. from Google

Psychic Sister (who also has a location in Olympia, WA) supports local vintage traders and local businesses with their consignment boutiques, which offer not just vintage but small batch and handcrafted lifestyle goods like books and zines, tarot, candles, and jewelry to empower your spiritual journey and creativity. Also, their logo features Orcas which is just so special!

Reclaim It! PDX is a creative reuse store and one of the best vintage stores in Portland for home DIY supplies

I’m so happy to have a creative reuse on this list! Reclaim It! is a nonprofit storefront that salvages materials from the PDX metro transfer station so that the community can transform and reuse them for their own creative projects. In less than 10 years, their volunteers have extended the lives of over 700,000 pounds of reusable materials. They not only have a craft department, but used metal, wood, hardware, and tools, and even antiques.

If you don’t know, a creative reuse shop is a secondhand shop for DIY, craft and art supplies. Usually donation based and volunteer run, they help keep creative materials (whether unused or partially used etc) out of landfills. If you’re a crafter this is a goldmine for incredibly inexpensive creative supplies like yarn, paper, fabric, stickers, pencils, paints and so much more.

For Seattle friends: I go to Seattle Recreative, which even has gifting and some party supplies. For the home DIYer and builder, Ballard Reuse has building materials. Both shops accept donation of so many items you might otherwise consider trash!

vintage overalls from zero wave in portland, or

Zero Wave is a vintage clothing store specializing in rare and “medium rare” vintage for all genders. It’s well curated and full of trendy fashion like Levi’s, graphic tees, and 90s tops, that you absolutely shouldn’t buy new — because you can get the real deal here. You can shop via Instagram here.

memory den portland, or

I shared my visit to Memory Den Vintage Mall in this Reel last year, and I’ll definitely be back (how cute are those kitty salt and pepper shakers?). One of the larger vintage stores in Portland, they feature booths from tons of different antique vendors selling clothing, homewares, decor, accessories, books and so much more. This is a two story antique mall that you could easily spend a couple hours perusing, so don’t rush! Also, they’re the local go-to for vintage radios.

acid wash jeans from banshee in portland, or

Banshee specializes in trending vintage fashion and accessories as well as beauty and wellness from local and cult brands in the space. If you’re not local, shop a huge selection on their website!

lowland portland flea

The Portland Flea Market is the last weekend of the month April-October at two different locations in the city (one on Saturdays, the other on Sundays). They are more like a curated craft and vintage market than a traditional flea, offering not only vintage fashion and homewares but products from some of Portland’s best makers in ceramics, jewelry, and textiles. And of course, some good local snacks and drinks! It’s always a fun time. (Photo of Lowland)

our store vintage portland

Adorable vintage boutique OURstore features a mix of curated vintage wearables and handmade jewelry, much of which you can shop online. They also host Supermarket, a night market/block party featuring vintage vendors, with 5 dates from May through September (3rd Saturday of the month). Hope to be in town for one of those soon!

midnight sunlight peach velvet chairs

Midnight Sunlight has been featured twice in ArchDigest’s top vintage shops in America because of their high-end designer collection of post-war decorative arts, modernist furniture and lighting, folk art and contemporary fine art as well. They offer a selection of furniture and objects on their website as well.

workshop vintage in portland, or

Part gift boutique, part vintage, Workshop Vintage offers womens fashion and quirky collectibles, along with handmade wares, accessories, and gifts from local designers. Get a feel for their boutique via Instagram.

village merchant antiques portland

Resale boutique Village Merchants has a little bit of everything, mostly in the home decor/wares and collectible categories. Fun if you’re looking for a quirky gift or a little flair for your own dining or decor collection.

vintage pink wool coat from xtabay in portland, or

Xtabay is Portland’s spot for beautiful vintage dresses from the 1950s, 1960s and more. Their brick and mortar is temporarily closed, so you can find the collection online. Give them a scroll if you have a special event on the books, or just love to look at all things vintage glam!

wink vintage portland

Wink Vintage is a boutique full of All-American vintage fashion like band tees, sweatshirts, ringer tees, and denim, some of which you can buy online through their shop.

hello sunshine vintage in portland, or

Another hybrid handmade-and-vintage boutique, Hello Sunshine, offers up a whimsical collection of giftable goodies in fashion, home, lifestyle and more.

Portland really is one of my favorite cities that I’ve been to for shopping vintage, whether fashion or home. I bring home something beautiful every time I go. Let me know which vintage stores in Portland should make this list!

You’re undoubtedly inundated with Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Thanksgiving, blahblahblah sales (should we all just call it “sale month” at this point?), so I know when you see a gift guide these days you really want it to be something special. I feel the same way, which is why I spend probably way too long hunting down the perfect products to add to articles like this! (But if it influences *anyone* to shop small rather than mass-produced, it’s worth it, I think.) Small Business Saturday is a big buzzword for blogs like ours, dedicated to independent makers and shops. But it’s really about spreading the word about these businesses so that people will think of them when making a purchase not just this week or month, but all year long.

Below, we highlight some of our sustainable directory members and their small business Saturday/holiday season promotions.

Clothing

Small Business Saturday Sales - BackBeatCo

Back Beat Co (pictured above) is offering 35% sitewide with code BFBONANZA

LA Relaxed is a slow fashion brand making women’s essentials all under one roof in Los Angeles. They’re offering 40% (even on sale items) with code FESTIVE. They sent me the Dream Fleece Hoodie a while back and I can confirm it’s as comfortable as it sounds. It’s perfect when you want a really light, relaxed layer.

Knickey, one of my favorite sustainable underwear brands, is offering 25% off sitewide from 11/24 to 11/28. If you’ve recently started transitioning your bras and undies to sustainable brands, both WAMA (also reviewed in that article) and Knickey are great places to start because they are on the more affordable end, and these sales can go a long way for your necessities!

WAMA makes undies for men and women, as well as bralettes, from hemp. (Fun fact, I’m wearing them right now…) They are offering 40% off sitewide all weekend!

New member Cea is offering up to 75% their line of slow fashion loungewear and basics including womens sweat sets and tees. Their pieces are all organic and naturally dyed.

Maika Goods is having their biggest sale of the year, with 20% off orders $50+ and 30% off orders of $100+. They offer sustainably made bags and have a great variety of sizes, styles, and prints.

Another new member, Isabella Eve Apparel, who specializes in made-to-order slow fashion in custom sizes, is offering 20% off sitewide now through Tuesday with code BLACKFRIDAY. Plus, a freebie will be included with all orders!

The Waight, who makes the most beautiful, cozy hand-dyed organic cotton loungewear, offers 20% your first order with code ORGANIC.

Looking for bridesmaid gifts? Camas Lilly Co (pictured below) offers gorgeous sustainably made bridal and bridesmaid robes crafted from deadstock fabrics. Buy two items and receive 30% off!

Cartagena Colombia travel guide with Zuahaza

Zuahaza is hosting their holiday sale all November long, with 15% off and free shipping with code Z15NOV. See our latest favorites from this artisan home decor brand here and here!

For our new member Nightshade, which is an amazing hybrid plant/tattoo shop in Seattle, you can snag 25% off everything in the plant shop using code CYBER2022 for one day only, beginning midnight on Monday the 28th.

TerraKlay‘s sale runs through 11/29 and includes 20% off of everything on their site! You might remember them from our DIY Furoshiki gift wrap or holiday tablescape last year when we shared their shibori dyed napkins and table runner.

ichcha - blockprinted textiles

New member ichcha (pictured above), who specializes in hand block-printed textiles, as well as clothing and accessories, is offering 30% off with GRATEFUL30 and free US shipping on orders over $75

Made Trade‘s Black Friday and weekend sale is 15% off sitewide with code GREENHOLIDAY. They’re also offering up to 60% off select sale items. This is definitely a one-stop shop for ethical gifts!

Last but not least, we recommend our own shop that Jenn and I launched a couple months ago! Enjoy 20% off of gifts, decor, artwork and more on wallflower. Learn more about us here!

Check out our sustainable directory and be sure to click on each thumbnail for more promotions (and just to discover amazing ethical brands and small businesses in general)–this list is far from exhaustive and we’ve only highlighted a few above before running out of time to post! 😌

A final note… Even when it comes to Small Business Saturday and other more intentional movements, my idea of shopping consciously still applies. This means I don’t just buy something just because it’s on sale, and I take a bit of time to get to know the brand and learn whether I’d actually recommend them to a friend.

It’s been a minute since we shared a moodboard for the conscious maximalist, so in honor of cozy season we’ve got one featuring our favorite artisan home decor in natural and warm hues. Perfect for fall, but work just as lovely in any other season, so you know you’ll keep it on display for a long time.

Like much of the internet, I’ve become obsessed with the pairing of lush, sagey greens and oranges, corals, and pinks. It’s a bit deeper than I usually go in my own decorating, but I find myself gravitating to it more and more, so I think it’s beyond a trend for me at this point!

My primary muse for this collection is that WIP (Work in Progress) LA Rug and how it marries warm color with green and blush. The rug is made in Bhadohi, India using mid-weight, flat-weave cotton. It also comes in a runner style which I’ve been dreaming about for my tiny kitchen!
